Dataquest-IDC T-School Survey: 2010
http://dqindia.ciol.com/content/top_stories/2010/110112403.asp
IITs Rule Overall, Others Catch Up in Placement IITs, Dataquest -IDC T-School Survey in 2010, engineering colleges, technology institutes, HR, placement, Drishti Das Manoah Wednesday, November 24, 2010
Into its sixth year, the Dataquest-IDC T-School Survey in 2010 comes up with its annual ranking of the top technology schools in the nation. This is the only survey engineering colleges targeted at employers, not students. The survey per se, included various parameters such as placements, infrastructure, academic environment, and industry interface. Undoubtedly the IITs, premier world famous institutes in India, are ruling the roost. Studying in an IIT is the first thing that every ambitious engineering aspirant can think of in India. Set up under the Institutes of Technology Act 1963, for many years IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee were the seven IITs in India that were termed as National Institutes of Importance. Eventually, for a nation which is so huge in every dimension, the need was felt for some more institutes of high standard technology education. The noble thought was put into action and as a result, currently we have 15 IITs in the country, with eight new ones being added over the last two yearsIIT Ropar (2008), IIT Bhubaneswar (2008), IIT Gandhinagar (2008), IIT Hyderabad (2008), IIT Patna (2008), IIT Jodhpur (2008), IIT Mandi (2009) and IIT Indore (2009).
In addition, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal announced this August that the government would soon confer the status of IIT to the Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) as the matter has already been approved. The success of the IITs led to the creation of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) in the late 1990s and in the 2000s and interestingly, IIIT Hyderabad, set up in 1998 and the youngest among T-School, already finds place in the Top 10 list of Dataquest-IDC T-School Survey. The IIT tales therefore are very inspiring, which is why IITians are so highly regarded, not just in India, but across the globe.
While there were 29 new entries into the Top 100 T-School list, IIT Bombay led the pack and was adjudged the best Technology School in the country. IIT Delhi grabbed the 2nd rank by pushing down IIT Kharagpur to the 3rd place followed by IIT Madras. Not to be forgotten, IIT Kharagpur was at the top position of the list for the last three successive years. While 6 out of the top 10 ranks were occupied by IITs alone; IIIT Hyderabad, BITS Pilani, NIT Surathkal, and IT-BHU Varanasi took the other 4 places in the list.
Prestige and the Other Factors
Top universities surely do have their advantages. For example, many of the top ten schools have more funds and thus better research facilities or quality of student life. Since a university is an essential investment for the students future, both students and their parents want to ensure that they are getting the best deal. As per the Dataquest-IDC T-School Survey 2010, the total tuition fees for IIT Bombay is `274,926, and that of BITS Pilani and IIIT Hyderabad are `40,000. While there is no denying that degrees from prestigious universities/colleges certainly carry some weight when it comes to getting better jobs after graduation, many students still look at the total costs they would incur on higher education, including not just tuition but also others such as personal expenditures, textbooks, hostel fees etc. Secondly, location is something that many T-School applicants take for granted. But the fact is that one cannot study hard and well if she/he is unhappy with the surroundings, which include the infrastructure and academic environment of the college. In the Dataquest-IDC T-School Survey 2010, IIT Bombay proved to be not just an overall topper but also excellent in its infrastructure and academic environment as well, followed by IIT Delhi. IIT Kharagpur, on the other hand, trailed the other IITs on the parameter of infrastructure. The impact of its last years medical infrastructure failure causing a third year students death seems to be prevailing still.

Note: This is a follow-up post of earlier post on Top 50 private engineering colleges in India
In 2007 we had published the Outlook India survey of Top Government Engineering colleges and Top Private Engineering Colleges, but this time around Outlook has skipped the survey.
However, Mint has published a survey ranking Top 50 Government & Private Engineering colleges as well on exact same parameters that Outlook had done earlier, so the comparison between the rankings can be justified.
Following are the parameters on which the rankings have been done:
- Intellectual Capital
- Pedagogic systems (the art or science of teaching; instructional methods)
- Industry Interface
- Placements
- Infrastructure and Facilities
I am giving here the cumulative scores and not broken down on the parameters given above. You can find complete breakdown of scores here.
Unlike the Private Engineering Colleges, this list is seeing lot of shuffle in the top 10 ranking. IIT Kharagpur was at the top spot in 2008, whereas it has fallen to 4th position. IIT, Mumbai which was at third position last time has taken the top position, followed by IIT Kanpur & IIT, Delhi.

Dear Sir,
My son is applying through DASA and we seek your advise for clarity before we fill up the application online.
1. We have an option of giving 30 choices of branches/college. In case, we restrict to 10 colleges/branches and in the unfortunate event of not being selected for any of the opted choices, will he able to get through spot admission even though he had no choices opted earlier.
2. As a proof of residence in U.A.E, will it be enough if we attach copies of visa pages from the passport.
We request your goodself to kindly clarify the above two points so that the submission can be successful.
Thanks & Regards
Neelakantan R.A

1) Yes, it would be very good situation if you don’t get anything in 10 choices as you will find some pretty good options in 2nd list and spot admission
2) Proof of residence is more of a reqmnt for Foreign applicants. I would think your school certificate and visa copy should be just fine. Please contact NIT-K for more details and post the reply here.
3) With 2040, good chances of getting in NIT-W CSE

Dear Mr. Raj,
Thank you very much for your reply and thanks a ton for the wonderful support you extend to millions of parents/students every year.
I am eager to know your opinion about admission for ECE in NIT T, W, Allahabad, Nagpur, Surat. His score is 2040.
Thanks once again

ECE in NIT-A, N and S should be easy to get with the score.

Dear Mr. Raj,
Please advise which are good NIT’s for Chemical Engineering?
Posted by nrispeaks on June 1, 2011 at 6:09 pm
Go by the ranking of the college. I have seen AIEEE qualified candidates pref and the seats fill by college ranking (NITW/T/K in that order)- no separate ranking for Chem or any other branch. If any reader has any personal knowledge of any such ranking separate from college ranking, please share with reasons.

Dear Mr. Raj,
My son has secured 2040 in SAT II. His choices are ECE NIT T-W-A-N-S. In case he gets CS in Warrangle (and not ECE), what do we do to get ECE NIT A or N or S. If we accept CS-W, and keep it open for list two and three, the system will only look for higher choices. It will not go for lower choices. (Thats what i believe). hence what should be done so taht he gets a chance to get ECE A or N or S instead of CS in W.
Thanks
Posted by nrispeaks on June 2, 2011 at 5:29 pm
I am not sure why he would get CS-W when his top priorities are ECE-T-W-A-N-S . I think I haven’t got your pref correct. You could drop out of the 1st list and submit new pref or get the seats from spot admissions. In any case, since NITK is the right agency, please contact them and share your knowledge here.

neela…if you have still not submitted the choices
go this way
1. ECE NITT
2.ECE NITW
3. ECE NITA
4.ECE NITN
5.ECE NITS
6.CS NITT
7.CS NITW
In this order. Now if you get 7th choice, that time you can ask for higher option.

sir, i secured 92% in my cbse boards and 2350 in my SAT II subject test(PCM). Sir, what are my chances of getting EEE in NITK?
Posted by nrispeaks on June 10, 2011 at 2:17 pm
With 2350 score, it should be a cakewalk to get any college/branch you like except ECE in NITK.

Dear Raj & fly,
You and your team are doing great service to students and parents. Keep up the good work.
I heard from some students that within the next year all NIT’s will be converted into IIT’s. Do you have any information about this?
Regards,
Posted by nrispeaks on June 20, 2011 at 7:20 pm
Dear KP,
It is not true at all that NITs are converting into IITs. The HRD ministry is grappling with issues with the newly opened IITs already. There was a talk some 3-4 years back to convert some NITs (like Rourkela) to IIT, but in the end govt decided to create new assets rather than taking shortcuts of converting other colleges to IITs.

Dear Mr Raj,
I have got admission into Thappar University for ECE engineering …and i got a score of 1810 in my SAT 2 …I am interested in ECE at MNNIT Allahbad?…will it be possible for me to get ECE at Allahbad and secondly from a campus placement point of view which of the two institutes would you recommend
Posted by nrispeaks on June 24, 2011 at 8:56 pm
More than 50% chance of you getting MNNIT-A ECE. MNNIT is better for placement. However, please keep in mind that NRI students also have different set of needs and all may not settle well in MNNIT. I know someone who got admission in MNNIT-A and them moved to Thapar due to food and health reasons. God has not made everyone as same and you need to evaluate where you lie in terms of living life as it comes.
