NEET Syllabus 2012 UG Medical Exam to be conducted by MCI

This post discusses few tips, tricks and ideas on how to sail through Pre-Medical (MBBS) national exams like NEET exam or AIPMT exam

1) About NEET & AIPMT:

NEET: National Eligibility and Entrance Test:

The MCI (Medical Counsil of India) has been nominated as the central agency to conduct NEET exam from 2012-13. MCI has prepared the draft syllabus (link) and had invited public feedback. We expect that the NEET exam would be similar to AIPMT exam and the necessary preparation required for AIPMT exam would suffice to clear NEET exam as well.

AIPMT: All India Pre Medical Test

The All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) exam is conducted by the CBSE, Delhi for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in more than hundred medical colleges around the country.

AIPMT-2011-Information-Brochure and list of participating colleges

Currently, 15% of the total seats in all medical and dental colleges run by the Union of India, state governments and municipal authorities in India (except J&K & AP), are reserved for successful AIPMT candidates. AIPMT conducts exam at two levels. First part is preliminary exam normally held on 1st Saturday of the April month (3rd April 2010). The second part is mains conducted in the month of May (16-May-2010).

AIPMT exam pattern has been changed with effect from 2010. Now, the mains are to be made completely objective (MCQ) like the prelims, owing to complaints about the unreliability of the subjective mains. It is expected that more difficult and application-level questions would be asked on the pattern of AIIMS that has assertion-reason questions.

About 1950 MBBS and 260 odd dental seats are available through AIPMT in more than 100 colleges. However anyone getting ranks within 3000 can reasonably hope for selection due to overlap with other state-level exam. NCERT books are the best preparation ground for both the prelims and the mains.

AIPMT Exam Date: AIPMT exam would be held per following schedule in 2 Stages :

Admission Process: Foreign citizens, PIO card holders, OCI (Dual Citizens), NRI students and NRI sponsored students can apply under the Foreign/NRI category. 15% of the seats in private medical colleges in India are reserved for this category.

There is no transparent admission process except in KMC (Manipal/Mangalore) and SRMC Chennai. You shortlist few medical colleges, visit India, start talks with the admissions staff directly. If one can’t visit the college personally, hire a ‘broker’ (may charge Rs. 50k to 2 lacss without you knowing about it) as college admission staff hardly talks on phone. Since most of these colleges milk NRIs, they charge higher than set fees by the states by way of donation fee in cash without receipt. Therefore, even to initiate talks with admission staff, be ready to butter the palm of junior staff. A donation amount will be set. When the ‘deal’ is done, proceed to pay the amount and you get a seat in the college. This is why it’s important to make a deal early (preferably in May/June than late July when rates are higher by about 5 lacs). Except Manipal and KIMS, most others like to take the entire course fee in advance.
