Tips for studying abroad

Racial attacks, weak global economy or a slowdown in hiring, nothing seems to distract Indians from the ‘foreign’ fixation when it comes to pursuing higher studies.
But before you embark on your ambitious venture, have you considered if you really need the degree? Do you have the funds to finance the course and will you be able to repay the loan?
Will the degree enhance your earning capacity drastically? Go through this checklist to ensure you don’t run into unlikely hurdles before you hop on to that flight.

NEET Syllabus 2012 UG Medical Exam to be conducted by MCI

Medical test row may trigger fresh State-Centre spat

Mehesh Trivedi

13 August 2011

Well, it would seem so if one goes by the swiftness with which the Gujarat administration has rejected the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) proposal to hold a common entrance examination for admission to medical colleges throughout the country.

Letters have just been dashed off to the MCI and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, saying the MBBS course aspirants from the state would be at a great disadvantage if the proposed National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) became a reality from next year. Chances are, the arguments could trigger a fresh confrontation between Gujarat’s Bharatiya Janata Party regime and the Congress-led UPA government. Continue reading

AIEEE 2010 Question Paper, Answer n Cut-off

The AIEEE 2010 exam was held on 25 April 10 all across the country today. AIEEE 2010 was a 3 hour paper with 90 questions in total for 432 marks – 30 questions in each of the subjects. Each subject had 24 questions of 4 marks and 6 questions of 8 marks – hence 144 marks in total per subject. There were 4 choices in all questions.
The Maths section had assertion and reasoning type questions while the Physics section had two passages. The pattern was not different from AIEEE 2009 and was a pretty balanced paper. Most of the candidates found maths to be a tougher paper and physics a easy one to solve.
300 marks (out of 432 marks) could get a rank of 1000, 250 marks a rank of 5000 and with 215 marks one can get a rank of about 10000. 185 marks could get a rank of 20000.

SAT II Subject Tests: Everything About It

SAT II Subject Tests:

The SAT II Subject Tests are created and administered by the College Board and the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the two organizations responsible for producing the dreaded SAT I (which most people call the SAT). The SAT II Subject Tests were created to act as complements to the SAT I. Whereas the SAT I tests your critical thinking skills by asking math and verbal questions, the SAT II Subject Tests examine your knowledge of a particular subject, such as Writing, U.S. History, Physics, or Biology.

Originally, SAT stood for Scholastic Aptitude Test. When the test changed a few years ago, the official name was changed to Scholastic Assessment Test. In 1997, the testmakers announced that SAT no longer stands for anything, officially.

It is administered seven times a year — usually in October, November, December, January, March, May and June — on Saturday mornings.  The dates for taking the exam are already fixed & hence it requires a consideration preparation schedule. SAT scores are quite significant for securing admission at undergraduate level. The SAT is a PBT (Paper Based Test).

The difference between the SAT I and SAT II?

SAT I is largely a test of verbal and math skills. True, you need to know some vocabulary and some formulas for the SAT I, but it’s designed to measure how well you read and think rather than what you know. The SAT II is very different. It’s designed to measure what you know about specific disciplines. Sure, critical reading and thinking skills play a part on these tests, but their main purpose is to determine exactly what you know about writing, math, history, chemistry, and so on

How to Crack AIPMT Exam?

Please refer below link for NEET Syllabus

NEET Syllabus 2012 UG Medical Exam to be conducted by MCI

This post discusses few tips, tricks and ideas on how to sail through Pre-Medical (MBBS) national exams like NEET exam or AIPMT exam

1) About NEET & AIPMT:

NEET: National Eligibility and Entrance Test:

The MCI (Medical Counsil of India) has been nominated as the central agency to conduct NEET exam from 2012-13. MCI has prepared the draft syllabus (link) and had invited public feedback. We expect that the NEET exam would be similar to AIPMT exam and the necessary preparation required for AIPMT exam would suffice to clear NEET exam as well.

For more info on NEET exam please refer below link

AIPMT: All India Pre Medical Test

The All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) exam is conducted by the CBSE, Delhi for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in more than hundred medical colleges around the country.

AIPMT-2011-Information-Brochure and list of participating colleges

Currently, 15% of the total seats in all medical and dental colleges run by the Union of India, state governments and municipal authorities in India (except J&K & AP), are reserved for successful AIPMT candidates. AIPMT conducts exam at two levels. First part is preliminary exam normally held on 1st Saturday of the April month (3rd April 2010). The second part is mains conducted in the month of May (16-May-2010).

AIPMT exam pattern has been changed with effect from 2010. Now, the mains are to be made completely objective (MCQ) like the prelims, owing to complaints about the unreliability of the subjective mains. It is expected that more difficult and application-level questions would be asked on the pattern of AIIMS that has assertion-reason questions.

About 1950 MBBS and 260 odd dental seats are available through AIPMT in more than 100 colleges. However anyone getting ranks within 3000 can reasonably hope for selection due to overlap with other state-level exam. NCERT books are the best preparation ground for both the prelims and the mains.

AIPMT Exam Date: AIPMT exam would be held per following schedule in 2 Stages :

AIEEE Exam- How to Crack it?

This post discusses few tips, tricks and ideas on how to breeze through AIEEE exam.

The AIEEE exam is conducted by CBSE for admissions to India’s premier national level institutes like NITs, IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), DCE, PEC, many deemed universities, government funded institutions and technical colleges in the country. More than 1 million candidates appear for this exam and the exam is counted as the largest exam in the world held on a single day.

AIEEE 2011 Information Brochure

The AIEEE consists of two papers. Paper -1 (PCM) is administered to the candidates desirous of admissions to B.E/B.Tech stream and Paper 2 (Part I-Maths, Part II- Aptitude & Part III-Drawing) is administered to candidates for B Arch/B.Planning. The exam has objective type format with multiple choice questions. There is negative marking in the exam- for every wrong answer one fourth (1/4) of the mark allotted for that question is deducted. For left out questions, there is no negative marking. Marking more than one answer for a question is considered a wrong answer and negative marking is applied.

The exam is not tough at all and can be cracked with some discipline and hard work. The candidates scoring about 50% marks in the exam can expect to get a rank around 10000. In cricket terminology, if you can avoid follow-on in the exam (i.e. score say 226 out of 425), you are on the way to get a rank below 10000. Here are some tips and tricks to crack this exam and the rules can be generally applied to crack any engineering exam.

Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Exams – How to Crack Them

This post is all about “How to Crack Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Exam”. I am pleased to share with blog readers that today my article on the subject has been published  by ezinearticles.com, the best online article publisher directory.

As Featured On EzineArticles

“Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) exams with negative marking are the current trends for exams internationally. The exam pattern is feared by some students because the choices look confusing, tricky and risky, especially when exam preparation is not 100%. Here we would discuss few ways to improve scores to solve/crack the multiple choice questions (MCQ) based exam.

Having myself passed three of the 20 hottest certification exams (Sun Java, Value Engg, PMP) based on MCQ format, I have concluded that MCQ tests are like Driving License Test. These driving tests are not about whether you can start engine, put your foot on gas pedal and go. On the other hand, they are about general understanding of vehicle itself (i.e. exam pattern), navigation skills (when to speed up, when to slow down, have control at all times, do defensive driving), know all traffic symbols & rules- high speed lane is only meant to overtake (i.e. hurry up with questions only when essential), give way to vehicles when needed to be safe (skip tough questions to save time), look out on road for potholes/obstacles/wetness and slow down (i.e. watch out for tricky questions and don’t fall in traps/distracter), follow drive-test examiner’s instruction completely (follow the question’s instructions as to what is expected from us) and so on. Following are the general tips on how to crack multiple choice question (MCQ) exam:

SAT : Test Pattern, Good Scores, Tuition fees and Scholarships

This post is all about SAT I exam on the request of a blog reader from Dubai (UAE) who asked “Could you please tell me what’s the SAT exam pattern, a good score on SAT test for a top US engineering college like MIT, Stanford, Caltech or Cornell? Moreover, I kindly request you to tell me where can I get some practice tests for SAT?”

This post discusses the important aspects of SAT Reasoning Test and provides side-by-side comparison of SAT scores for top US colleges.

The SAT Test:

The SAT Reasoning Test (SAT I) is a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. The SAT is owned, published, and developed by the College Board- USA. The current SAT Reasoning Test takes three hours and forty-five minutes and costs $45 ( additional $26 for international students, extra $23 for India/Pakistan centres). In SAT test, one can possibly score from 600 to 2400, combining test results from three 800-point sections (math, critical reading, and writing), along with other subsections scored separately.

The SAT test has been more popular among colleges in the coasts and the ACT test more popular in the Midwest and South. There are some colleges that require the ACT to be taken for college course placement, and a few schools that formerly did not accept the SAT at all. Nearly all colleges accept the SAT test.

Admission Process: Foreign citizens, PIO card holders, OCI (Dual Citizens), NRI students and NRI sponsored students can apply under the Foreign/NRI category. 15% of the seats in private medical colleges in India are reserved for this category.

There is no transparent admission process except in KMC (Manipal/Mangalore) and SRMC Chennai. You shortlist few medical colleges, visit India, start talks with the admissions staff directly. If one can’t visit the college personally, hire a ‘broker’ (may charge Rs. 50k to 2 lacss without you knowing about it) as college admission staff hardly talks on phone. Since most of these colleges milk NRIs, they charge higher than set fees by the states by way of donation fee in cash without receipt. Therefore, even to initiate talks with admission staff, be ready to butter the palm of junior staff. A donation amount will be set. When the ‘deal’ is done, proceed to pay the amount and you get a seat in the college. This is why it’s important to make a deal early (preferably in May/June than late July when rates are higher by about 5 lacs). Except Manipal and KIMS, most others like to take the entire course fee in advance.
